Tools for Exploring the Unexplained

There isn't a piece of equipment that can tell you whether or not a ghost is in the room.

Paranormal investigators use a variety of tools to document the environment around them. Some record what we can see and hear. Others help us notice changes that might otherwise go undetected.

The equipment doesn't give us the answers. It gives us information to investigate.​ 

A Look Inside the Gear Bag

Digital Recorders

One of the simplest tools can also be one of the most interesting. Digital recorders capture audio throughout an investigation and are often used in an attempt to document Electronic Voice Phenomena, better known as EVPs.

EMF Meters

EMF meters detect changes in electromagnetic fields. Those changes can have many sources, both ordinary and unexplained, which is why understanding the environment around a reading is so important.

REM Pods

A familiar sight on paranormal investigations, a REM pod creates an electromagnetic field around the device and responds when that field is disrupted.

Cameras

Still photography, video, infrared, and other camera systems allow investigators to document locations and activity throughout an investigation, including things that may not be noticed in the moment.

Environmental Equipment

Temperature meters, motion sensors, and other monitoring devices help investigators keep track of changes in the surrounding environment.

Spirit Boxes

Spirit boxes rapidly scan radio frequencies and are sometimes used during attempts at communication. Like many paranormal tools, what comes through can be open to interpretation, making context an important part of reviewing a session.

The Equipment Is Only Part of the Story

Knowing what a piece of equipment does is easy.

Knowing when to use it, how to interpret what happens, recognize interference, document the circumstances, and determine whether something is actually unusual takes experience.
