The Language of the Paranormal

EVP? EMF? Residual?

Spend enough time around paranormal investigators and you'll quickly discover we have a language of our own.

Here are a few of the terms you're likely to hear during an investigation.

Apparition

A visual manifestation or figure that is believed to have a paranormal origin. Reports can range from a shadow or partial figure to something that appears completely solid.

Debunking

Looking for a natural or ordinary explanation for something that initially appears unexplained. Debunking is an important part of paranormal investigation.

EMF

Electromagnetic Field. Investigators use EMF meters to detect changes in electromagnetic fields within an environment.

EVP

Electronic Voice Phenomenon. A voice or vocal-like sound discovered on an audio recording that wasn't heard by investigators when it was recorded.

Intelligent Haunting

A term used to describe reported activity that appears to respond to or interact with people or changes in its environment.

Paranormal

Something that falls outside what is considered normal or currently understood. The word isn't limited to ghosts, although it's commonly associated with reported hauntings and unexplained activity.

REM Pod

A device that creates an electromagnetic field around itself and alerts investigators when that field is disrupted.

Residual Haunting

A theory used to describe activity that appears to repeat rather than interact with the people around it. It's sometimes compared to a moment from the past being played back within a location.

Spirit Box

A device that rapidly scans radio frequencies and is sometimes used by paranormal investigators in attempts at communication.

Trigger Object

An object chosen because of its possible connection to a person, time period, or location and used during an investigation in an attempt to encourage interaction or activity.
